James Grier Hoyt chairs the firm’s Real Estate Transactions Practice and is a member of the firm’s Management Committee. Grier is a leading leasing attorney in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, having closed more than 15 million square feet in leasing transactions on behalf of landlords and tenants, including build-to-suit and headquarters transactions. As a skilled negotiator, Grier thrives on structuring business deals to achieve advantageous results for all parties. He operates efficiently in the fast-paced world of real estate with meticulous attention to detail.

Grier’s practice focuses on negotiation and documentation of  leases, acquisitions, and development deals for office buildings, medical office buildings, shopping centers, industrial, flex-use, warehouse, build-to-suit, and mixed-use properties. He represents owners, developers, and users in acquisition, development, leasing, ground leasing, and disposition transactions in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and along the East Coast. His retail work includes high-end retail leasing in Chevy Chase and Rockville, Maryland.

Grier takes a collaborative approach to closing transactions by building relationships with all stakeholders involved in a deal and facilitating civil and respectful conflict resolution. He applies his creative problem-solving skills to develop solutions, alternatives, and compromises that satisfy his clients’ goals, and provides sound legal counsel in plain English, assisting his clients in making successful strategic decisions.

Grier is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, New York, and North Carolina. He is committed to using his strengths and abilities to give back to the community through his involvement with the local Habitat for Humanity affiliate.
