William “Bill” M. Hoffman, Jr. is a partner in the firm’s Bethesda office. Having practiced real estate law in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area for more than 36 years, Bill offers deep insights and extensive knowledge of the title examination process, title insurance standards and recording procedures. His primary practice areas include commercial title examination, settlement, and title insurance. During his decades of practice, Bill has closed hundreds of large transactions involving complex legal and recording issues while helping his clients mitigate risk.

Bill regularly represents commercial real estate developers and investors in matters including acquisitions, refinances, construction financing transactions, and permanent loan financings. He has represented parties on both sides of transactions involving office buildings, shopping centers, multi-family developments, and residential tracts throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia. With every deal, Bill focuses on protecting his clients’ interests while helping all parties to the transaction successfully collaborate to come to terms and close.

Bill is closely familiar with the local laws that govern real estate closings in Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia, and has devoted himself to staying up to date on the ever-changing rules of title underwriting. When confronted with obstacles that have the potential to delay or derail deals, Bill finds solutions that work. He is committed to seeing his clients’ deals close as efficiently as possible, and he assists with reducing survey, transfer tax, insurance, and other closing-related costs. Bill’s clients also benefit from his long-standing relationships within the real estate industry and with the government recording agencies. This includes close working relationships with local court clerks and county attorneys who handle transfer tax issues and related matters.

As a recognized authority on the legal aspects of local real estate transactions, Bill has spoken before the members of the Montgomery County Bar Association and Maryland State Bar Association, and has presented continuing legal education (CLE) seminars for other attorneys in Maryland.
